Bill McCreary makes plans to return
Written by Rob Massey - The Guelph Mercury
GUELPH — NHL referee Bill McCreary sits in the Tim Hortons inside the Gryphon Centre talking about his future, when a couple of young girls approach his table.

They’re about 10 and are participants in a Gryphon girls’ hockey camp.

They stare at him, then ask for his autograph, happily handing over a Gryphon athletic schedule when he readily agrees. They leave with their prized possession clutched in their little hands.

Yes, NHL referees are rock stars, too, and McCreary is hoping to...

Off-ice ref sees pros, cons to different location
Written by Dan Rosen - NHL.com
TORONTO -- At times, Scott Ferguson will find himself out of position on a play when he's officiating games in the Ontario Hockey League. But off the ice completely? Nah, never that drastic.

But when you mention Koharski’s name, many people conjure up his off-ice yelling match with New Jersey Devils head coach Jim Schoenfeld during the 1988 playoffs, where the coach told the referee to “have another doughnut.” A YouTube favorite for hockey fans...

Nanaimo loses referee Gilmour
Written by Greg Sakaki - Nanaimo News Bulletin
Referees aren’t always the most popular sports figures, but Lloyd Gilmour connected with his community.

Gilmour, a longtime NHL referee and Nanaimo restaurateur, died Wednesday of complications from Alzheimer’s. He was 82 years old.

"He's at peace now," said his son Richard. "It's a tough go, that Alzheimer's."

Born in Cumberland, Lloyd was a talented junior hockey player with the Nanaimo Clippers before a logging injury sidetracked his playing career. Instead, he became a linesman and...
